TitleIntroducing transparent web caching in a local area network
AbstractThe term "transparent web caching" refers to cache technology in which web traffic is automatically intercepted and redirected toward one or more cache servers. The redirection of web data can be accomplished using L4 switches or routers. Being completely transparent to the user (no browser configuration is required) the service can be easily implemented and turns out to be scalable and fail-safe. This work presents the results of our experimental use of transparent caching technology in a simple network environment. We focus on the impact this technique could have on network performance, with all its benefits and problems, as well as its effects on end users. The analysis is based on data gathered in an operative network during a two-month period.
