Brugherio MB Universite Montpellier 2, France Faculte des Sciences et Techniques Universite Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah de Fes, Morocco The activities of WP7 in this project deal with the dynamic and fate of sediment adsorbed organic toxic substances in the peculiar situation of temporary rivers as affected by hydrology and biological processes. This topic is neglected in the current scientific literature which is mainly addressed to the effect on the ecological community. The possible impact on compound fate of the drying and rewetting dynamic can be attributed both to the effect of sediment aging, during high temperature and dried conditions, and to the variation in biodegradation activities. During the first project months all WP7 partners contributed to the selection of representative subcatchment areas and target substances, describing major characteristics of each of the four basins Candelato IT, Evrotas GR, Vene FR, Sebou MA , in order to select sub catchment areas relevant for the monitoring of hazardous substances. This selection was carried out in accordance and within the net of sampling sites considered in the framework of the other WPs, mainly WP3, in order to investigate in the same areas and periods. Information on population, land use, activities, hazardous substances presence in the basin and related management options, have been collected and described in the deliverable D7.1, uploaded on the project web site on January 2010. Considering the wide spectra of hazardous compounds diffused in the environment, each partner decided to analyze specific classes of HS, depending from its specific analytical capabilities and the specific pressures on the basin. An exchange of sediments was planned and fulfilled in the mirror basins. Consequently, no intercalibration exercises have been carried out during the project. Quality control of analytical data was ensured by each laboratory through the analysis of reference materials and certified reference materials QC procedure and participation in inter laboratory studies QA procedure .
