TitleCONTAMINANT SENSITIVITY OF BALANUS PERFORATUS AND B. EBURNEUS COMPARED TO BALANUS AMPHITRITE (=AMPHIBALANUS AMPHITRITE)
AbstractThe present study investigated the feasibility to use, in toxicity bioassay, Balanus perforatus and B. eburneus as alternative species to standardized species Balanus amphitrite (Italian National legislation). For this purpose a series of acute toxicity tests with two metals (Cd and Cu) and one organic compound (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate, SDS) was conducted. B. amphitrite and B. perforatus showed a comparable sensitivity towards Cd with mean 48h LC50 values of 0.28 ± 0.06 mg/L and 0.40 ± 0.04 mg/l, respectively. B. eburneus was the less sensitive species to Cd (0.91 ± 0.06 mg/L), although it showed a similar sensitivity to B. amphitrite toward Cu (0.75 ± 0.20 and 0.72 ± 0.37 mg/l respectively) and SDS (8.19 ± 1.18 and 10.71 ± 1.82 mg/l, respectively). On the other hand, B. perforatus was the most sensitive species, in terms of LC50 values, toCu and SDS. These results suggest that the two barnacle species B. perforatus and B. eburneus are suitable to conduct acute toxicity bioassays and could be proposed as alternative and complementary species for ecotoxicological studies.
